Greetings,
Members of our campus community work very hard to ensure that we serve our students well. That task is becoming more challenging as we attempt to do more with less. It is always wonderful to receive external recognition for our efforts. Thus, I am reprinting, in full, a letter from the U.S. Department of Education commending our financial aid staff. Kudos!

Each spring, the University hosts an Honors Convocation in Ann Arbor for recipients of various awards on all three campuses. This year, 123 Flint students, 89 Dearborn students, and Ann Arbor students (too numerous to count) were acknowledged for their academic success. Included in these honors were our students in the 9-term, 8-term, and 7-term Angell Scholars program (all “A” record). Congratulations to all!

This year we also hosted our annual Scholarship Dinner that matches up student scholarship recipients with their donors. The evening was truly a standout in every way, especially the program. Our speakers (student Cameron Waites, alumnus Jermaine Brown, and alumnus and donor Barry Trantham) did a truly compelling job of sharing their individual stories. To end the evening, our student, mezzo soprano Francesca Chiejina, provided two musical selections which garnered a standing ovation. It was truly a memorable evening – a wonderful way to say “thank you” to the many donors who support our students.
Our campus is recognized as being one that is very supportive of student veterans and their educational needs. For that reason, I have been invited to testify before the Military and Veterans Affairs Committee of the Michigan House of Representatives. Between now and May 17, I will be looking for ideas as to how the state could further assist with our efforts to recruit veterans to our campus. Please direct any ideas to David Lossing.
We’ll be hosting our annual “Town-Gown” meeting on May 3. Invited are representatives from the city and county, as well as those from health care, K-12 education, the arts, and business. This is our chance to share future plans and accomplishments with our colleagues – our second annual event of this kind.

A group of us traveled to Washington to attend UM’s Congressional Breakfast with area alumni and friends, including Dr. Gregg Pane, former President of the D.C. Alumni Chapter, and our graduate. Gregg will be serving as our commencement speaker, and we are honored by his willingness to accept this assignment to speak at both ceremonies.
