By now, most of
you have probably learned that our UM-Flint Chamber Singers
have been invited to perform at the Pentagon as part of a
Black History Month celebration on February 11. The press
release detailing this event can be found here. I am
excited that I will be able to be with our students and
faculty members at the Pentagon for this event. We will
be joined by Dr. Greg Payne (UM-Flint alumnus) who is
providing financial support for this visit. Dr. Michael
Boucree, also a UM-Flint alumnus, is also providing
significant support (as well as another anonymous donor). We
salute these donors for their generosity and encourage other
support as well (contact Shelly Hoffman at 762-3350).
Other funds are being provided by the Music Department,
UM-Flint Annual Fund, the CAS Dean's Office and the
Chancellor's Office. What a great example of partnership! I am
looking forward to this event and am excited that our students
will have such a unique opportunity to showcase their work and
to visit our nation's capital.

*COMPETE*
I am pleased to announce that Rob Montry
(Assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs/Ombuds)
has passed the certification examination for Certified
Organizational Ombudsman Practitioner (with flying colors!).
Rob is part of the first group of practitioners to take this
exam; we congratulate him on this
result.

*CONVENE*
The
Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Budget and Strategic
Planning will convene
for its annual retreat on February 24 at the Ross House. This
year our discussion will center around the new strategic
planning process which we will now undertake. Our potential
consultant for this process, Dr. Sal Rinella, will have
visited with a variety of campus constituents in early
February to ascertain how he might assist us with the planning
process. We are currently reviewing the list of faculty and
staff who have volunteered for this project or who have been
nominated to serve.

*CONNECT* On January 6, we held
our first UM-Flint "Census Count" meeting. As you know, April
1, 2010 is Census Day. It is very important that we connect with everyone who
should be counted. We will be sponsoring a number of
activities in the next few months leading up to Census Day so
that everyone will be aware of this important milestone. Stay
tuned and be counted! Our MLK
events this year on January 18 connected us in very meaningful
ways with our community, especially in Flint and Genessee
County. Starting with a joint breakfast with Big Brothers, Big
Sisters that was "standing room only", our staff, faculty and
students proceeded out to their assignments for the day.
I had an opportunity to visit with our volunteers as they
carried out their work. We had a record number of volunteers,
and I was really impressed with their work.
