Summer
on many college campuses always seems to be a time for "Pardon
our Dust," and UM-Flint is no exception. While we have
construction, grounds, and maintenance projects taking place
year round, many larger projects are often undertaken in the
summer. This summer is no
exception. In the University Center, the Clint's Cafe and Deli
renovation is nearly complete, as is work in the Ontario Room.
Cost estimates and plans for upgrades to the Happenings Room,
Michigan Rooms, and KIVA are being prepared. New food court
signage and fire protection upgrades are also underway in
UCEN. In the Northbank Center, renovations to the space now
leased by the Bankruptcy Court are nearly complete and staff
have moved from their prior location to the 3rd floor South
Building. We welcome them to our campus! We will also continue
to make masonry repairs on that building, and will be
completing an analysis of restoration to the
elevators. One of our most
significant projects will be the conversion of WFUM space in
the White Building to two 60-seat classrooms. This change will
be very helpful in allowing us to expand academic programs in
that building. In MSB, work will commence on air conditioning
and other changes to MSB 106 (cyber classroom) and changes to
MSB labs (163, 165, 169). Significant roof repairs will begin
shortly on MSB itself. First Street Residence Hall will
receive its yearly cleaning and repairs after residents move
out. A number of skywalk and
parking deck repairs will take place, as well as selected
carpet replacement in some common areas. Finally, a new box
office and information desk will be installed in the theatre
lobby. Two major projects will be
underway outside -- the installation of a peace garden in
Willson Park, and significant changes to Lot T. The
spiral-helix exit ramp of the Harrison garage will be removed;
parking lot and landscaping upgrades, as well as new paint on
the rear of the garage will significantly upgrade the
appearance of that entire area that is a highly visible part
of our campus. All in all,
this will be a busy summer for the staff who will work on
these projects. They work hard to maintain the appearance,
cleanliness and physical condition of our campus, and I know
that we all appreciate their efforts.

*COMPETE*
Consumers Energy has recognized the University of
Michigan-Flint as its "Green Customer of the Year." The campus
was specifically cited for its "substantial stewardship to
renewable energy" as well as for the many and varied energy
savings efforts that have been undertaken recently. What a
great testimony to the many people on our campus who are
making a difference in being responsible stewards of our
resources.

*CONVENE* On
June 28 I will be meeting with Mayor Walling and the President
of Diplomat Pharmacy to learn more about plans for the
company's expansion in Flint. Specifically, I hope to learn
more about what we can do to assist the organization with its
transition and expansion and how we can prepare current and
future students to be potential employees.

*CONNECT* On June 10 Vice
Chancellor Mary Jo Sekelsky, Executive Director Scott Bertschy
and I spent several hours visiting with Steve Wilson and other
Ruth Mott Foundation staff at Applewood. We were fortunate to
have one of those perfect 75 degree, sunny June days to tour
the extensive grounds of the estate. Most importantly, we were
able to talk about the priorities and interest of the
Foundation and how we might collaborate and involve more
students in Applewood activities. It was a wonderful meeting.

LEADERS AND
BEST At the end of
June, Vahid Lotfi and Chris Waters will transition back to
their respective roles as Associate Provost/Dean of Graduate
Programs and Chair of the Department of Communication and
Visual Art. All of us owe them a debt of gratitude for their
exemplary service. They are "Leaders and
Best."
