As everyone
knows, our visit from the Higher Learning Commission took
place October 25-28. The six-person team that visited UM-Flint
had a strenuous, challenging three days of non-stop meetings,
individual consultations, and records review. In spite of the
stress of preparing for the visit, we all enjoyed our
interactions with the visiting team. Their "exit" comments to
us were very positive and affirming. Much work went into the
preparation for the visit from many, many campus colleagues,
and I am personally thankful for and appreciative of, their
efforts. I also extend thanks to our visitors. I know, as a
team visitor myself, how much time and effort it takes to
participate in a team visit, and I am always impressed with
the energy that goes toward making a visit
successful. We will receive the
team's draft report in the next few weeks, and will have a
defined period of time to respond to errors of fact. Then the
team will prepare a final report that goes to the Commission
for its review and (hopefully) approval later in the year.
Thus, we will not be able to officially report on the outcome
of our review for several months.
In the meantime, we will begin a new journey - that of
reviewing and updating our strategic plan. That process will
begin with the appointment of an oversight committee as well
as (possibly) a couple of task forces to address specific
issues. There has never been a more important time to think
strategically about what we do, and I am personally excited
about defining our future in a way that moves us even further
along the continuum of "leaders and best."

*COMPETE*
I just received a
letter indicating that the American Chemical Society student
chapter on our campus was selected to receive a Commendable
Award for 2008-09. The letter noted outstanding student work
as well as that of Dr. Jessica Tischler, chapter advisor.
I also received a letter from the Golden Key
International Honor Society indicating that our chapter
achieved a silver chapter standing. Again, the letter noted
excellent student work, and commended advisor Kelli Hoppe.
Congratulations to both groups - great examples of "leaders
and
best."

*CONVENE* On November 12,
we will be convening
our club sports presidents, a number of campus administrators
and staff, and the committee that prepared a report about
possible direction of sports programs on our campus for a
dinner to celebrate our club sports program. At the dinner,
Bill Canning from the UM-Ann Arbor club sports program will be
speaking about the history of club sports at Michigan, and
several of us will be outlining a plan for the promotion and
enhancement of our club sports program. I look forward to
working on the development of this important new student
program in the months ahead!

*CONNECT* Our alumni are
everywhere! But what are the odds that they'd be entertaining
two of our employees at a restaurant in Alexandria, VA? While
the odds are long, that did actually happen. Two of my
colleagues from UM-Flint were in Washington D.C. recently and
dined at a restaurant in Alexandria. One of them was
recognized by one of the musicians, who identified himself as
Brian Lewis, a UM-Flint graduate. Wherever we go, we can
connect with our graduates!
