RuthJanuary 2013

Greetings,

We have started the 2013 year off well in a myriad of ways.  Of great importance is our good news about enrollment.  In looking at our “Tenth Class Day” numbers, I note “double digit” increases in the following:  new freshmen, transfers, readmits, non-degree students, and dual enrollees.  At the graduate level, we see “double digit” increases in DAP, DNP, and DPT.  Overall, our enrollment is up 3.8%.  Thanks to all who are helping to make our growth continue.  Our numbers for Fall are also looking very positive, another sign that much great effort is taking place.

Compete

Our students Erika Trigg and Robert Burack have been nominated for Michigan Campus Compact’s 2012-2013 Commitment to Service Award.

I am pleased to report that our Greek Women’s Fall 2012 GPA is 3.10, exceeding the undergraduate women’s GPA of 3.05.  Congratulations, Sisters!

As many of you know, UM-Flint was named Number 3 among satellite campuses nationwide by the Huff Post.  Our on-line graduate program for Nursing was also named third-best in the nation by US News & World Report.  What good news for our campus!

Convene

Our first LEAD class members have concluded most of their initial work.  We now enter Phase Two for them – convening periodically for forums with our leadership team and outside speakers.  We will be starting a second cohort in the Fall of 2013.  Stay tuned for an announcement about the nomination process.

Every year I visit as many of the sites where our students work off-campus during our MLK Day of Service.  I am always impressed with the hard work that takes place on that day.  It is yet another example of being an “Engaged Campus.”

Personally Speaking

I began my career in higher education at Thomas Nelson Community College in 1971.  Over the years I have known thousands of students, whether through classes I’ve taught, independent studies I have overseen, or student groups I have worked with as an administrator.  They’ve all been special, each with a unique story.  One of the most special students I have ever met was Felipe Andrez, our student body president from 2011-2012.  Felipe had a sense of joy, of connection, of caring that truly set him apart.  We will all miss him and we should vow to continue his legacy in every way that we can.
