So
many good things happened in May that it is hard to keep track
of them all! Clearly, one of the very best was the celebration
on May 27 of the David and Francine Zick gift to our campus.
This $1.4 million pledge is the largest donation to our campus
by an alumnus, and will serve multiple purposes. In every way,
David and Francine epitomize the "Three T's" of giving: Time,
Talent, Treasure. They have given of their time on numerous
occasions as committee members or leaders of campus efforts;
their talents have been shared with us in many ways-- for
example, David served as our December 2009 Commencement
speaker; and their treasures have been shared with us, and
through their pledge, will continue to be shared with us in
the future. I salute them both, and I look forward to working
with them now and in the future to continue making the
Michigan Difference.

*COMPETE*
May was quite a month in the "Compete"
category! Last month I wrote about two new signature alumni
groups that have recently been formed at UM-Flint. We've just
learned that one of these programs, the Alumni Admissions
Ambassadors, has won a CASE (Council for Advancement and
Support of Education) Silver award in the category "Alumni
Relations Programs: New Program Initiatives." There were
fourteen entries in this category and one gold, one silver,
and one bronze award were given. My congratulations to our
alumni participants as well as to our admissions and alumni
staffs and especially to the directors of those two units. We
appreciate the volunteer work. Second,
Assistant Professor Brian Di Blassio's composition (it doesn't
have a title so I'm calling it "Untitled"!) for Michigan
Television was nominated for an Emmy at the 32nd Annual
National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Awards.
Congratulations, Brian! Third,
student Cameron Waites was one of five national winners of a
VA Mortgage Center.Com scholarships. Our best wishes to
Cameron.

*CONVENE*
On
June 9 we will convene
for our annual staff service awards dinner and recognition
event. This year there are 24 honorees, totaling 350 years of
service. I look forward to this annual event. It is
outstanding that we have so many long-term employees who
remain dedicated to serving our campus and its students. These
individuals continue to make a Michigan difference and I
salute them!

*CONNECT* In May, our
campus hosted a "Downtowns of Promise" meeting for the
community. More than sixty attendees, representing citizens
young and old, from all walks of life, connected with one another,
with local officials, and with our campus to talk about ways
we can all work to improve our downtown. A number of attendees
were actually first time visitors to campus, even though they
live in the city. It was a great way to connect what we do
with what our citizens need. Forging these connections will
only make us stronger. On an equally
positive note, we have deepend our connections with the Crim
Foundation to be the official sponsor of the "Michigan Mile"
race that will be part of the Crim Festival of Races. Making
this dream a reality was a real team effort that underscores
the continued needs for collaboration and strategic effort. My
thanks to all the planners!

*On
a personal note* My thanks for all the
"get well" wishes. Two weeks ago I received an unexpected
diagnosis of pneumonia, which clearly wasn't part of my summer
plans! I'm grateful for the emergency care from the University
Health Service in Ann Arbor, and for all the good wishes from
friends and colleagues.
