This month
marks an important milestone for our campus - the culmination
of ten years of progress. What is that milestone? It is, of
course, the ten-year Higher Learning Commission's site visit
on October 25-28. A team comprised of seven individuals will
be on our campus and in the community for three days to assess
how well we meet the accreditation criteria of the commission.
Achieving and maintaining accreditation is central to all we
do, and is an absolute must for the
successful continuation of our campus and its programs.
Our self-study committee and a large
number of other staff, faculty and administrators have worked
diligently to ensure that we are well prepared for this visit.
I recently had an opportunity to re-focus my attention on
regional accreditation by serving as a HLC site visitor at the
University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire. I have served the HLC as
a team member for a decade, but did not participate on any
teams last year while I was transitioning to UM-Flint. My
visit to Wisconsin reminded me of all the little details
necessary for a successful visit, and I will be sharing them
with our organizers. Being a team
member is a very time-consuming, intense activity. You arrive
on Sunday, often to an unfamiliar airport, find your way to
the hotel, get settled and then meet with your teammates on
Sunday night. The next two days are filled with meetings,
review of documents, and just generally trying to "figure out"
an environment with which you are unfamiliar. When you return
home, I guarantee that you are always exhausted! So
please express your appreciation to the team for their hard
work and dedication!

*COMPETE*
Earlier this year our
Community One program, which brings together faculty, staff
and students, along with business mentors, to help develop
minority business enterprises, was nominated for an award to
be given at the annual MMBDC ceremony (Michigan Minority
Business Development Council). Nominees must prepare an
extensive application package, which is reviewed by an
independent body of judges and given a rating score. In our
category, "Education and Government", the three finalists were
MSU, Wayne State and UM-Flint. Imagine our great surprise and
excitement when, on September 30, our name was called as the
winner at the ceremony! Lots of our Community One partners
attended the event, and I must say that it was truly a "feel
good" moment for our university and the good work we are doing
with the minority business community. I want to personally
thank all who participate in this endeavor; special thanks go
to Greg Snyder, Purchasing Manager, and the SOM for their
leadership. Community One rocks!!

*CONVENE*
Every year the UofM Board of Regents meet on the Flint campus
in October. This year, our Regents will visit us on October 15
for a full day of meetings and activities. We will be making a
special presentation about our newly-developed Veterans
services and programs at the open meeting in the
afternoon. We will also
make a presentation about downtown Flint and premier our new
video.

*CONNECT* It's turning out
to be a great fall for connecting with our alumni.
On September 10, the UM-Flint hosted a very successful
gathering for local alums at a new restaurant in Flint. Then,
on September 24 Barry Trantham received the first UM Alumni
Association Distinguished Alumni Award given to a Flint
graduate. There were a number of alumni in attendance at the
MMBDC event mentioned earlier. And our Homecoming activities -
reunion brunches, tailgate, etc. were well attended. We're
making real progress in reaching out to our alums, as I have
wanted to do since my arrival last fall. If you wish to host
an alumni gathering in your area, let us know! We want to be
"on the road," reaching out and hearing all those great
stories of alumni success.
Speaking of alumni, our very own Christopher Paul Curtis,
noted author, kicked off his Winegarden Professorship with a
brief talk on September 21. He will be with us off and on for
both semesters and we welcome him back as a distinguished
member of our alumni family.
Likewise, on October 2, alumni awards were given to Cameron
Kurt Waites, Adele E. Karas, Karen S. West and Christopher
Paul Curtis. All in all, we're doing a great job of connecting with the members
of our alumni family! Keep those ideas
coming!
