IMPORTANT CHANGES TO THE MTTC BASIC SKILLS TEST AND ELEMENTARY EDUCATION TEST
Changes to the MTTC Basic Skills Test
Currently known and referred to as the MTTC Basic Skills Test this test name will change to the MTTC “Professional Readiness Examination” (PRE)
Until October 2013, registration material and information posted on the MTTC website will be labeled “Basic Skills Test.”
Information and registration materials for October 2013 testing (and later) will refer only to a “Professional Readiness Examination.”
The PRE will retain the field code #096.
New test objectives for the PRE will be available early March.
This examination is required for entry into the University of Michigan-Flint’s teacher preparation programs and for initial teacher certification in Michigan.
Changes to the Elementary Education Test
Elementary Education Program Update
The University of Michigan-Flint and the Michigan Department of Education are in a transition period regarding the Elementary Education programming. Current and new elementary education and early childhood elementary education candidates are advised that old program and new program course requirements are subject to change during the transition period and that a new elementary education test will replace the current test, effective October 2013.
- MTTC Elementary Education Examination #103 (first offering Oct. 2013).
A new MTTC elementary education examination titled “ Elementary Education” (#103) will become operational at the October 2013 MTTC test administration. The examination will be constructed on the basis of objective frameworks currently posted on MTTC website, in category of Test Objectives for MTTC fields #103 and #104.
MTTC Test Objectives- These objectives will be combined into one set titled Elementary Education (#103). There will not be a test 104 (as previously reported) as all of the objectives from #104 will be incorporated into #103.
Elementary Education (#103) will be a single 150-item test that may be registered as a single test during either AM or PM test session for paper-based testing.
The cost of a paper-based 150-item Elementary Education (#103) exam will comply with current legislative cap of $75.
The fee for optional computer-based Elementary Education (#103) exam is unresolved at this time.
The study guide for Elementary Education (#103) will be available in April 2013. A full length practice test will be available in August 2013 on the MTTC website. Fee for use is unresolved.

MTTC Elementary Education Examination #83 (last offerings Sept. 2013)
Test Objective and Study Guides for MTTC field (#83), will be adjusted to read “effective until October 1, 2013”.
The current elementary MTTC field (#83) will be offered in paper-based format for the last time at the July 2013 MTTC tests administration.
The current elementary MTTC field (#83) will be offered during the August 2013 and September 2013 computer-based testing windows.

Elementary Education Requirements for Admission to Program
- Completion of all courses in Phase 1 Cycle with minimum grade of B-
- Completion of PSY 100 and SCI 125 with a minimum grade of C
- Overall GPA 2.75 or better
- Minors GPA 2.75 or better
- Passing score on MTTC Basic Skills Test.
Effective Fall 2007, all students must undertake a criminal background check that includes fingerprinting prior to their admission to the Education program. Students are responsible for any cost incurred in undertaking the criminal background check.

Register and take the MTTC (Basic Skills Test) (required for admission)
When registering for any and all MTTC exams, please remember to request that your test results be sent to the University of Michigan-Flint. Per instructions from the Michigan Department of Education, we cannot accept your personal copy of your results.
If you fail to have your results reported to UM-Flint, you will be required to order an additional copy to be sent to the University from the testing company at a cost of $15.00. Please note that the University of Michigan-Flint’s institution code is 30. Failure to have your results sent to the University when you initially register for the exams and ordering the additional copy at a later date could result in a delay in the admission process or the recommendation of your certification to the Michigan Department of Education.
