Award Notification

Electronic Award Notification

  • All award notification is done electronically (with the exception of the first notice to new and transfer students).  Students receive notification in their UM-Flint email account.  Please see the instructions below to view and accept/decline aid.
  • It is the responsiblity of the student to respond to the requests for additional information that are listed in the original or revised email award notification.

Paper Award Notification

  • Paper award notifications are sent to the most current address the student has on file with the university.
  • Only the first award notice is sent to the student on paper.  All additional award notices are to the UM-Flint email account.
  • The paper award notice will list any additional information that is required at the time the award notice is printed.  Forms that need to be filled out and returned will also be included with the paper award notice.  In order to see the status of all current requirements it is important to check the student requirements area on SIS.

Viewing Awards on SIS

On-line acceptance/declination of work study* and all federal loans** – including Perkins

Complete the following:

  1. Login (use UMID and UM-PIN)
  2. Financial Aid
  3. Awards
  4. Award Aid Year
  5. Select Aid Year
  6. Review Award Overview [tab]
  7. Accept Award Offer [tab]
  8. Read “Required Reading”
  9. Return to SIS
  10. Scroll down and follow the instructions on the Web site to accept/decline/decide later

First Time Borrowers

SUBSIDIZED & UNSUBSIDIZED LOAN BORROWERS (DIRECT LOANS)

On-line signature of Electronic Master Promissory Note (EMPN)

  • Students borrowing through the Federal Direct Loan Program must complete a Direct Loan Electronic Master Promissory Note (EMPN) in order to receive their Direct Loan funds.
  • Authorizes the University of Michigan-Flint to credit Direct Loan funds to your student account.
    Students will never complete another EMPN for the duration of your University of Michigan-Flint education.  
  • After completing the EMPN, you will immediately receive a confirmation number so that you know the federal government has received and accepted the EMPN.
  • Complete the following:
  1. Click on sign in box.
  2. When logging in the slashes (/) in the date of birth will appear automatically.
  3. Click Complete Master Promissory Note
  4. Select the University of Michigan-Flint as your school.
  5. Enter required information.
  6. Click on the shaded headers to read sections C, D, E, and G.
  7. You will have the option to print a copy of the MPN once completed.
  • The Office of Financial Aid receives electronic confirmation that the EMPN has been completed.
     

On-line Entrance Counseling

  • Students borrowing through the Federal Direct Loan Program must complete counseling in order to receive their Direct Loan funds.
  • Complete the following:
  1. https://studentloans.gov
  2. Click on sign in box.
  3. When logging in the slashes (/) in the date of birth will appear automatically.
  4. Click Complete Entrance Counseling
  5. Select the University of Michigan-Flint as your school.
  6. Enter required information.
  7. Answer quiz questions
  8. You will receive a confirmation of passing the quiz - print for your records.
  • Your quiz results will be transmitted electronically to the Office of Financial Aid.

 

PERKINS BORROWERS

If you accept a Perkins Loan, you will be sent instructions with a Master Promissory Note (MPN). Perkins MPNS are signed one time and are valid throughout your continued attendance at UM-Flint, (continuing UM-Flint students who have already signed a MPN will not be sent a new one). Students are required to fill out a new Perkins Loan Questionnaire each academic year.

 

Deadlines for Accepting Aid

Work Study must be accepted by September 30th.

Loans will be canceled if not accepted by the end of the loan period.
