Graduate Student Grant

The Graduate Student Grant is available for graduate students admitted to or enrolled in a University of Michigan-Flint graduate program who demonstrate a financial need to initiate or continue graduate studies. It requires neither repayment nor employment.

Do I qualify?

You qualify to be considered for the Graduate Student Grant if you meet the following criteria:

  • You have fulfilled all prerequisites and application requirements.
  • Your current admission status is not probationary or conditional.
  • You are in good academic standing.
  • You will be enrolled at least half-time in the semester(s) you receive the grant.
  • You are a Michigan resident as defined by the University of Michigan.
  • You demonstrate financial need* as determined by the receipt of a valid Expected Family Contribution (EFC) level by the Office of Financial Aid. An EFC is generated after a FAFSA is processed.

*Financial need is demonstrated by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each academic year (July 1 – June 30).  This takes approximately one-two (1-2) weeks to process.  Eligibility for the Graduate Student Grant is dependent upon the receipt of a valid Expected Family Contribution (EFC) level by the Office of Financial Aid.

When can I receive the Graduate Student Grant?

Grants are awarded for the fall and winter semesters.

How do I apply?

You must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) available at http://www.fafsa.edu.gov/ for the academic year in which you seek grant support. There is no separate application to complete for the grant.

To be considered, your valid Expected Family Contribution (EFC) must be on file in the Office of Financial Aid by the priority deadline of March 1.
