What is Covered and What is Not
The UM-Flint International Student/Scholar Health Insurance (IHI) only covers you when you are sick, injured or pregnant. If you are sick or injured, the costs for the doctor, the hospital, lab tests, x-rays, etc. will be covered.
This plan does not include dental or vision care. The University Health Services Eye Care Clinic in Ann Arbor offers eye exams at reduced rates for students and glasses are also available.
To see exactly what is covered, see the “Summary of Benefits” section of the UM-Flint International Student/Scholar Health Insurance Plan Brochure. To see what is not covered, see the “Exclusions” section of the IHI Plan brochure. For questions about coverage, call the insurance company at 1.800.239.9697 or come to the UM-Flint International Center.
- This plan does not generally cover what we call preventative care. Preventative care includes your annual physical, annual visit to the gynecologist, routine tests or screening, check-ups for children, and immunizations.
- Routine gynecological examinations are covered (1 per academic year)*, as well as routine pap smears and a routine mammogram for women between the ages of 35-40. For women 40 years of age or older, a routine mammogram may be covered every year, or more frequently based on the recommendation of the woman's physician. For more information on these benefits, see "Additional Benefits" section of the UM-Flint International Student/Scholar Health Insurance Plan Brochure.
- Medical evacuation to your home country is covered, as well as repatriation. Medical evacuation occurs when you are too ill to complete your stay at the University of Michigan, and you must return to your home country. In this case, the medical costs of your return trip will be covered by the insurance company. Repatriation refers to the shipment of your body back to your home country in the event of your death. These charges will be covered to the reasonable and customary amount.
- Pre-existing conditions (i.e., any diagnosis or treatment for a medical condition as started before enrollment in an insurance plan) are covered if you entered the U.S. 63 days or less before you enrolled in the insurance plan. If you need treatment for pre-existing conditions within the first six months of your plan, please submit a copy of your I-94 card to the UM-Flint International Center. If you entered the U.S. more than 63 days before enrolling in the plan, the insurance company will only pay $1,000 for treatment for a pre-existing condition during the first six months of your plan. After you have been enrolled in the plan for six months, these pre-existing conditions will be covered at normal rates. Also, a pre-existing condition limitation does not apply to anyone who had UM-Flint provided health insurance plans such as GradCare or Premier Care immediately before enrolling in the IHI plan.
