Candace traveled to Kenya for 2 weeks as part of the 2011 Kenya UM-Flint faculty-led program led by Professor Maureen Tippen. Here is a reflection of her experience:
It was amazing. I learned to apply the skills I have learned at UM-Flint in new and fascinating ways. I would highly recommend studying abroad. My faculty leaders were amazing. They were supportive and wanted us to see as much as possible.
Which experience had the most impact on your personally?
When our group went to an orphanage in the slums to provide food and health screenings.
What were your expectations of the trip? How did your experience differ from your expectations?
I expected to learn a lot about the Kenyan culture and how to apply my skills in that setting. My expectations and actual experience differed greatly, I never knew that I would learn so much about myself as a person. This trip has molded my future as a nurse to be bigger and brighter than I every expected.
What was the biggest difference in culture that you experienced while a abroad?
The Kenyan culture is almost a 180 degrees different from the US culture. Everything in Kenya is so much more appreciated.
What surprised you the most about your time abroad?
How happy the Kenyan people were despite their surroundings.
How has this experience changed you?
This experience has changed me on personal and professional levels. I have become more understanding of life outside of the United States. I have learned a lot about myself and my career.
Would you recommend this program to other students?
Definitely, I feel everyone should experience an overseas learning experience. Whether it being a wealthy country or a poor country. It opens your mind to think globally not just in your home town.
