Dion Boose

From: Flint, Michigan
Majors: International Business

Dion traveled to Taiwan for 3 weeks as part of the 2011 Taiwan UM-Flint faculty-led program led by Dr. Jacob Peng. Here is a reflection of His experience:

The trip was very rewarding and insightful! I learned a great deal about other cultures, which I'm sure will further add to my business experience for the future. Dr. Peng is the faculty leader that led our trip abroad and I cannot thank him enough for the amazing job that he did for the entire group. A job well done. The lectures were very helpful in how they illustrated the importance of keeping a wide scope in business. Also, while visiting some cultural exhibits, it gave me a better understanding of eastern life and allowed me to identify with the locals.

Which experience had the most impact on your personally?

Interacting with the Taiwanese people by far! They are a resilient bunch of people.

What were your expectations of the trip? How did your experience differ from your expectations?

My expectations were to make a few new friends and land some connections for the future. The trip did that and much more. I feel that as a person, I walked away a changed and enhanced man.

What was the biggest difference in culture that you experienced while a abroad?

Free speech. It's not the same as in America, we are quicker to speak. In Taiwan they are more reserved

What surprised you the most about your time abroad?

How fast the trip went by, It just breezed right by.

How has this experience changed you?

I am much more understanding of foreigner students on campus. I find myself going out of my way to make others feel welcome.

Would you recommend this program to other students?

YES! It is by far the best experience that I have embarked on. Worth every penny.
