Stephen Carter
From: Ray, Michigan
Majors: Theatre Technology & Design
Stephen traveled to London for 3 weeks as part of the 2011 London UM-Flint faculty-led program led by Professor Stephan Landon and Professor Shelby Newport. Here is a reflection of his experience:
We had class in the morning, museums and galleries in the afternoon, shows in the evenings and weekends to our own devices. I personally traveled to Bath and Stonehenge one weekend.
I highly recommend Stephen Landon and Shelby Newport as course instructor/ faculty-leader. They were always available to talk prior to the trip and were exceptionally helpful and knowledgeable about the course material and our surrounding areas.
Which experience had the most impact on your personally?
My most memorable experience was getting to see a new musical by my favorite composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, on its 56th world premier showing.
What were your expectations of the trip? How did your experience differ from your expectations?
I expected to see inspiring pieces of art and architecture. I was blown away by the quality, variety, AND quantity of things I found that inspired me to do new things with my scenic designs.
What was the biggest difference in culture that you experienced while a abroad?
There was only a few small things that were different there, the biggest being that it isn't a common occurrence to just smile at a stranger as you pass them on the street.
What surprised you the most about your time abroad?
How close we grew as a group. I have made lifelong friends.
How has this experience changed you?
Lifelong friends, a new direction on design, and an extreme urge to go live there :)
Would you recommend this program to other students?
I already have talked up this program to all of my friends. This trip may be the only chance you will ever have to see this beautiful country and all of the wonderful experiences it holds.
London, United Kingdom
