Language, Linguistics and Literature

The Language, Linguistics, & Literature division supports the curriculum of the English Department and Foreign Language Department, which offer undergraduate degrees; the English Department also partially supports the American Culture master's program.

Monographs. The Language, Linguistics, & Literature collection holds 35,761 monographs, which is equivalent to a 3a, and is 69% of the number from the modified ACRL standard (51,984).

One problem with the literature collection is in access to collected works. In MIRLYN, the individual titles found in collected works are not accessible by subject searching; in many cases they are not even accessible by keyword searching. Author searching is the only reliable method of locating particular works that are contained only in collected writings. This problem is currently being addressed by Technical Services.

Acquisitions. The 1997/1998 monographs allocation for the English Department is $10,150. Taking a proportional share of librarians' budgets, plus the reference allocation, yields a weighted total of $12,301. This is sufficient to buy approximately 474 books at a discounted average price of $25.95 apiece. This amounts to about 7% of the total domestic publishing output for English, for an AC rating of 2b. Acquiring 10% of the publishing output per year would require a monographs allocation of $17,880; a 15% acquisitions rate would cost $26,806.

The 1997/1998 monographs allocation for the Foreign Language Department is $4557. Taking a proportional share of librarians' budgets, plus the reference allocation, yields a weighted total of $5523. This is sufficient to buy approximately 195 books at a discounted average price of $28.33 apiece. This amounts to about 5% of the total domestic publishing output for foreign languages, for an AC rating of 2b. Acquiring 10% of the publishing output per year would require a monographs allocation of $12,182.

Periodicals. The Library subscribes to the Modern Language Association Bibliography through MIRLYN. There are 126 relevant Wilson-indexed periodical titles, of which the Library has paper subscriptions to 52 (41%=2b) and web access to 22 more (58% total=3a).
