Why study Biology?

The study of life. Learning about new discoveries and making some of your own. Biology is the foundation that leads to the greatest flexibility and choice available. It’s the perfect step to one of many careers – find your path!

Why study Biology at the University of Michigan-Flint?

  • Hands-on experience. Small classes. Be a person, not a student number. Work closely with your professors in the lab, in the classroom and on research teams. Get practical experience students at larger universities often have to wait several semesters for.
  • Endless Possibilities. Move on to bigger and better things: graduate school, medical school, physician assistant school and many others. Choose to enter the working world immediately and pursue opportunities for research, education or consulting. A biology degree is the perfect foundation.
  • Pursue your Interests. If general biology isn’t for you, choose one of four other concentrations to tailor your degree to your interests while working to earn either a Bachelor of Arts  (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS) degree:

Human Biology (BA). Combine your interest in biology with your desire to work with people. This specialization is a great option for students preparing for physical therapy or physician assistant programs.
Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (BS). Get exposed to state-of-the-art technology and techniques in this growing area of biology! This rigorous program is designed to prepare students for continued study and careers in medicine, dentistry or veterinary medicine.
Natural History (BA). Interested in working with parks, nature centers or conservation efforts? This may be the program for you! Students focus on naturalist-oriented biology coursework while completing a broad liberal education.
Wildlife Biology (BS). Students in the wildlife biology program study the relationships between animal and plant communities. Learn field techniques in wildlife management and conservation. You’ll be well prepared for a variety of careers  or pursuing graduate study.

  • Get Involved. Join one of many biology specific groups and clubs like the Biological Sciences Club or the Pre-Med Club. Visit the herbarium. Study abroad. Work with your professors on research projects they have put together. Expand on what you learn in the classroom and put it practical use.
  • Exotic Experiences.  Take a field course that takes you under the waves of a Caribbean coral reef or into the spectacular color of the Amazon rainforests. Don’t just learn from a textbook, make the world your classroom and discover!
