Why study Philosophy?
What is good? What does justice mean? How do you define virtue? Philosophers examine the concepts and beliefs that a society holds. They work to analyze these and related behaviors as a means to discover precise explanations.
Why study Philosophy at the University of Michigan-Flint?
Possibilities. The philosophy program offers several different tracks:
- General Philosophy: This program will give you a broad exposure to a variety of topics in philosophy including logic, value theory, history, metaphysics and epistemology.
- Philosophy with an Emphasis on Ethics: This program follows the course plan for the general philosophy program but requires additional coursework in ethics for completion of the program.
- Philosophy and Psychology Joint Program: This joint program has been developed to combine elements from both the psychology and philosophy programs. You’ll receive an extensive education in human behavior, the effects of ethics and morality and the overall actions related to the human mind.
- Advanced Program in Philosophy: Students who are planning on pursuing graduate study are encouraged to work closely with a faculty member and complete additional coursework to prepare for graduate school.

Honors. In addition to the four tracks offered within the philosophy major, students are also able to incorporate our honors program into their philosophy degree. Open to both incoming freshmen and transfer students, our Honors Program will challenge your mind and provide many opportunities. All honors students have the chance to participate in professional conferences and complete a senior thesis project, which many students choose to complete as part of a study abroad experience.

While many students choose to remain in the field of philosophy, many others choose to branch out into other fields.
