About the Academy
Continuing a tradition of over 35 years, the University of Michigan-Flint Summer Vocal Academy offers instruction in music with a strong emphasis on singing to students from Flint and surrounding communities. Our Academy students experience a curriculum designed to nurture their musical skills through various music classes and activities and expand their understanding of music as an art. Students participate in choir and smaller vocal ensembles and take vocal technique, movement, rhythm, and music exploration classes. Our faculty are experienced University of Michigan-Flint instructors and guest music teachers.
Financial Support for the Summer Vocal Academy of Music comes from the University of Michigan-Flint K12 Partnership Office, the Community Foundation of Greater Flint, the Department of Fine and Performing Arts and the College of Arts, Sciences & Education Dean’s Office.
Curriculum
The Summer Academy is hosted on the beautiful UM-Flint campus in a safe and nurturing environment in the heart of the city. Classes are in sessions for two weeks, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. The program culminates in a full-length concert featuring all Academy students and is open to the community.
Blue Choir
Grades 5-7
Choir, Vocal Technique, Marimba Choir, Art, Music Exploration.
Maize Choir
Grades 8-12
SATB Choir, Vocal Technique, Soprano/Alto and Tenor/bass Ensembles, Music Exploration.
For Music Teachers
Teachers may nominate students who love singing, enjoy being a part of an ensemble, and are good citizens of their classrooms or voice studios. To nominate students for participation, please fill out the Teacher’s Nomination Form below.
Closing Concert
July 19, 6 p.m. | UM-Flint Theatre
Academy Participation Fee: $200
Financial incentives:
50% Early Bird Discount – students registered by June 14 pay only $100
30 % Discount – students registered between June 15 – 28, pay $140
Students registered after June 28, pay the full amount of $200.
Registration will remain open until the first day of the Academy.
Registration and Payment
To register for the Academy students must download, complete, and submit the Academy Participation Agreement either by email or snail mail.
Payment must be mailed and postmarked at the time of registration.

All registered Academy participants must submit the required forms below by the first day of the program. Without these forms, a student’s participation in the program may be delayed or jeopardized.
