From the Desk of the Director of Public Safety Chalmers F. Sanders
I would like to welcome you to our website. The University of Michigan-Flint community is a wonderful location for education, employment and life long learning. The University of Michigan-Flint campus can be considered a “city within a city”. The University Public Safety Department provides complete law enforcement services to the campus. Our police officers are licensed by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) and authorized to enforce all Federal, State and, Local laws and Rules of the University of Michigan Board of Regents. They are also deputized by Genesee County. Additionally, our officers are well versed in services unique to an academic institution. It is the policy of this department to work closely with students, faculty, staff and administrators to achieve its goal of a safe and secure campus environment. The Department of Public Safety’s statutory arrest jurisdiction includes university property, property adjacent to/and surrounding the University and Genesee County. In addition, your department of Public Safety participates in mutual aid agreements with the City of Flint, as well as with other surrounding local municipalities and cities, within this geographical area.
The Department is open 24 hours per day, 365 days a year. We are a diverse and progressive organization with quality goals and objectives. Some of the services provided include development of crime prevention programs; investigation of reported crimes, disturbances, traffic accidents, driving violations; transportation to medical facilities when appropriate; patrol and inspection of campus grounds and buildings as a deterrent to criminal activity and to detect potential safety or security problems.
It is the responsibility of each member of the University community to act in a security-conscious manner, to avoid actions which jeopardize their security or the security of others. Therefore, we (members of the Department of Public Safety) ask students, faculty and staff to adhere to all established policies and procedures governing conduct and behavior while on campus. These policies and procedures are listed on this website and in other publications such as the University of Michigan-Flint Student Rights Policy and/or the Standard Practice Guide. Remember, policies and procedures of this university are not designed to restrict your freedom, but rather to ensure that the rights and privileges of all individuals on campus are protected. Additionally, in order to maintain a safe campus, members of the campus community should immediately report any crime, hazard, emergency, or dangerous situation to the Department of Public Safety at 762-3335 or by dialing 911 (providing you use a campus phone). Again, please remember, pay telephones and/or cell phones are not considered campus telephones, calls made with either of these devices go directly to the City of Flint Police Department instead of your safety department.
Our department values diversity and strives to treat everyone with respect and dignity. We want to provide professional, fair and impartial law enforcement services to the entire university community, and hope that the information provided by our website is helpful. I encourage you to participate in making our campus safer. Please feel free to contact me if you have any suggestions on how we can provide better police service, as well as any other questions or concerns.
Thank you for taking time to visit our website and for making this a safer community.
Sincerely,
Chalmers F. Sanders
Director of Public Safety
