An Important Opportunity for Detroit High School Students
The University of Michigan-Flint is a full partner in this program established to assist students who are residents of the city of Detroit and graduate from city of Detroit high schools who meet the Detroit Promise eligibility requirements.
Amount of the Award
Renewable full-tuition (in-state rate) scholarships are awarded annually which is calculated as a “last-dollar” scholarship, which means it covers the remaining balance of college tuition and mandatory course fees after grants and other scholarships are received. Students are required to be enrolled and complete a minimum of 12 credits each fall and each winter semester.
Eligibility
- Resident of the city of Detroit from the 9th through the 12th grades
- High school seniors who attend all four years and graduate from any Detroit high school: Detroit Public Schools, charter, private, parochial, or home school. A student can attend more than one high school in the city of Detroit and still be eligible.
- U.S. Citizenship or permanent resident status and state of Michigan residency (as defined by the University of Michigan)
- GPA of 3.0 or higher by February 1st of senior year
- ACT composite score of 21 or higher or a combined SAT score of 1060 or higher
- Promise scholars must also apply for federal financial aid by completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid. This form may be filed electronically after October 1 of each year.
Scholarship Renewal
Full in-state tuition scholarships are renewable for six semesters, three years (a total of eight consecutive terms received) or the completion of a bachelor’s degree, whichever occurs first. Students must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, and meet the standards of satisfactory academic progress required by all financial aid recipients.
