CGS Internship Program
About CGS
The Center for Gender and Sexuality seeks to amplify the voices of Women and Girls, the LGBTQIA+ Community and survivors of Gender Based Violence and the intersecting identities within them. We lead our campus community on issues impacting gender equity, human sexuality/sexual health, and prevention of relationship violence including sexual assault, intimate partner violence, stalking and harrassment. We facilitate educational workshops through our peer education program, a group of trained student leaders who organize and develop training on campus like: Just the Fact’s Period, How to help a Survivor, Healthy Relationships, Sexuality 101, and Inclusive sex ed. In addition, the Center for Gender and Sexuality offers three 8-week certificate programs annually:
- Sexual Violence Prevention: This seminar explores the dynamics of intimate partner violence including consent, power and control, and bystander intervention strategies to prevent gender based violence.
- Healthy Masculinity: Open to all gender identities, the Healthy Masculinity certificate addresses the impact to rape culture, ideals about masculinity and power that has contributed to unrealistic expectations of gender stereotypes and violence.
- Queer Education and Advocacy: Discover and learn more about sexuality, gender identity and expression through robust discussion and current events impacting the LGBTQIA+ community.
Internship Opportunities
CGS offers a variety of academic internship opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students in social work, education, public health, communications or related fields. Each student experience is tailored to the student’s learning agreement and will deepen student awareness of sexual violence prevention and response work, human sexuality and sexual health, as well as gender equity and activism. Students will be provided with training towards certification in peer education, have opportunities to co-facilitate weekly peer psychoeducation groups (Women Talk Wednesday, Queer Thursdays), craft their own workshop centering CGS key areas of services, and/or support social media and events promotion through designing outreach materials, developing campaigns to raise awareness of key issues surrounding gender, sexual violence prevention and sexuality.
Eligible students must be currently enrolled and in good academic standing. Hours earned through the CGS internship will fulfill academic internship requirements of their selected field of study. To learn more, students may contact the Center for Gender and Sexuality Director, Samara L. Hough, [email protected] to arrange an interview for consideration.
