Darnell L. Moore is the author of this year’s Common Read selection, the memoir “No Ashes in the Fire: Coming of Age Black & Free in America,” which won a Lambda Literary Award and was listed by the New York Times Book Review as one of 100 Notable Books of 2018.
Born in Camden, New Jersey in 1976, Darnell Moore experienced abuse and bullying while growing up (including some boys trying to burn him with gasoline), but he ultimately graduated from Seton Hall University. He also has master’s degrees in clinical counseling (Eastern University) and theological studies (Princeton Theological Seminary).
In addition to being an author and essayist, Moore has been a social activist, podcaster (Being Seen), Director of Inclusion Strategy for Content and Marketing at Netflix, visiting scholar and visiting fellow, book editor, and more. His writings cover a variety of topics, including race and gender equity, sexual diversity, Black Christian theology, and masculinity.
