Fraternity & Sorority Life

Fraternity and sorority involvement provides a unique opportunity for students to have a balanced college life with a focus on academic excellence, brotherhood/sisterhood, community service, and responsible social interaction. Fraternity and sorority life allow students to make lasting friendships with individuals that share similar ideals and purposes.

The Office of the Dean of Students staff works closely with all recognized fraternities and sororities to improve their organizations and to help their members become successful student leaders of the University of Michigan-Flint community.

In 1969, the Theta Chi fraternity was founded on campus and, for many years, was the only Greek letter chapter at the university. In 1986, a small group of students started the process of building a larger Greek community. Since that time, fraternity and sorority life has grown to include 200+ students who make up 11 nationally recognized Greek organizations.

Interfraternity Council

The Interfraternity Council is the governing council for its three fraternities on campus. The specific purposes of the IFC are to: establish and administer rules governing recruitment and general oversight of fraternities; encourage scholastic achievement, cooperation, and harmony of its members; promote the best interest of UM-Flint; promote and maintain university spirit and loyalty which will transcend an individual fraternity’s ambitions; and provide services and additional support to its member chapters.

The three fraternities recognized by IFC are:

Two men are sitting at a table with laptops and various fraternity-related items, including a sphinx statue and a skull. Both are smiling and making hand signs. The man on the left is wearing glasses and a cardigan, while the man on the right is in a white shirt and tie.
Three men wearing Theta Chi fraternity clothing are standing in front of a house, smiling with their arms around each other. The man on the left is wearing a gray t-shirt, the middle man is in a red hoodie, and the man on the right is in a red cap and shirt.

National Pan-Hellenic Council

The National Pan-Hellenic Council is the coordinating body of nine historically African American, international Greek-lettered fraternities and sororities. The nine NPHC organizations are sometimes collectively referred to as the “Divine Nine.” The purpose of the NPHC is to foster the cooperative actions of its members in dealing with matters of mutual concern. To this end, the NPHC promotes the well-being of its affiliate fraternities and sororities, facilitates the establishment and development of local councils of the NPHC, and provides leadership training for its constituents.
