Creating a Campus Culture of Safety & Preparedness
University of Michigan-Flint Emergency Preparedness and Response
Providing a safe environment for employees to work and students to learn is a primary concern of the University of Michigan-Flint administration and campus community. All of us, regardless of our job description or title, want a safe and healthy environment. Critical to this goal is each of us being knowledgeable about what to do in the event of an emergency, understanding our roles and responsibilities, following the guidelines for responding to incidents, practicing and participating in drills so that our collective response becomes second nature.
Emergency planning & being prepared is our shared responsibility.
The UM-Flint Campus Emergency Response Plan is designed as an “All Hazards” approach to responding to a wide variety of emergency scenarios. Its primary focus is safely evacuating, sheltering, securing in place, seeking medical treatment or responding in the initial phases of an emergency incident. If an incident continues to evolve without being adequately controlled, the Campus Crisis Management Team may be activated partially or fully to further assess campus conditions and allocate resources. If the disruption continues for days, departments may initiate their Continuity of Operations Plan sometimes referred to as a Business Continuity plan.
UM-Flint has also developed and distributed the Emergency Preparedness and Response Guidelines Flipchart which is widely distributed and posted across campus. The electronic version of the EPRG Flipchart can be found here. Spiral bound printed copies of the EPRG Flipchart are available for units to post by emailing EHS at [email protected].
The ERP establishes a framework for UM-Flint to respond effectively and safely to an emergency. This includes assessing an emergency situation, coordinating a response effort and, most importantly, ensuring that individuals are informed, safely evacuated, sheltered or secured in place and accounted for with reasonable assurance.
