RNs who complete the program will be prepared to sit for the International Association of Forensic Nurses SANE-A or SANE-P certification exams. Nurses willing to work as SANEs in a rural or medically underserved community in Michigan will be considered for grant support.
The funding provides tuition support, travel expenses, and certification fees for those who qualify. With a robust yet condensed format, students receive comprehensive knowledge and are prepared to act as vital allies for sexual assault survivors.
The UM-Flint SANE program is currently admitting interested applicants for the following semesters:
- Winter 2025: Pediatric/Adolescent online didactic course and clinical skills course (on campus)
- Fall 2025: Adult/Adolescent online didactic and clinical skills course (on campus)
Adult/adolescent and pediatric/adolescent didactic courses have received approval from the International Association of Forensic Nurses.
The didactic content (SANE adult/adolescent and SANE pediatric/adolescent) for the new Certificate program will follow the established SANE Education Guidelines by the IAFN, the National Protocol for Sexual Assault Medical Forensic Examinations by the Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women, the American Nursing Association Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice, the Forensic Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice, and the IAFN current SANE A® or SANE P® Certification Preparation Examination handbook.
Why complete the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Program at UM-Flint?
Grant Funding Available
UM-Flint has received an Advanced Nursing Education and Health Resources and Services Administration grant with the focus of increasing the number of RNs who are trained and certified as SANE in Michigan. Thanks to this grant, we can provide tuition support, travel expenses, and certification fees for RNs willing to serve as a SANE in rural or medically underserved areas.
Positively Impact the Lives of Sexual Assault Survivors
When a SANE trained nurse is not available, forensic exams are often completed by a non-SANE-trained health care provider following a checklist. This practice can affect patients’ long-term mental and physical health and even jeopardize legal proceedings if done incorrectly. By increasing the number of available SANE nurses, and IAFN SANE-A or SANE P certified nurses, we can drastically improve the quality of care and outcomes for sexual assault survivors.
