When can I start?


Can I be directly admitted into the RN to BSN completion program or is there a secondary application?

  • Yes, you can be admitted directly into the RN to BSN program.
  • There is no secondary application.
  • When applying, make sure to choose BSN completion as your major (NOT pre-nursing), even if you are still in your associate degree in nursing (ADN)  or have not yet passed your National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCLEX-RN) exam.

Can I start prior to passing my nursing licensure exam (NCLEX-RN) or prior to graduating with my associate degree in nursing?

  • Students can apply and be admitted directly into the BSN completion program even before finishing their associate degree in nursing or passing their nursing licensure exam (NCLEX-RN). Students can take all 100-300 level nursing courses, along with any general education courses prior to passing their nursing licensure exam. 
  • Apply today to see what transfers in and what you still need to take. You will then work closely with an advisor to create a personalized course plan for you. We can even help you create a concurrent enrollment plan while you are finishing your associates degree in nursing! 
  • When applying, make sure to choose BSN completion as your major (NOT pre-nursing), even if you are still in your associate degree in nursing (ADN)  or have not yet passed your National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCLEX-RN) exam.

Can I take time off?

  • Yes, we offer 100-300 nursing classes every 7 weeks online. 
  • You can even take time off. We understand how busy you are and that life happens. 
  • You can take up to a year off without having to readmit.
  • You can start prior to finishing your ADN  and prior to passing the NCLEX-RN. 

Do credits expire?

  • No. Credit hours do not expire.

Do you require an MTA stamp (Michigan Transfer Agreement)?

  • No, we don’t require the MTA stamp but we recommend it.
  • The MTA stamp waives all general education credits.
  • If you do not have an MTA stamp, you can complete your general education classes online with UM-Flint. 
  • Talk with your UM-Flint advisor to see if enrolling in general education classes with  UM-Flint or completing the MTA stamp at another location would be a better fit for you. 

Does a student have to be employed as a registered nurse (RN)  to be enrolled in the RN to BSN completion program?

  • No, students do not have to be working as an RN to start or complete our program.
  • We do recommend work experience to further reinforce learning, but it is not a requirement.

How long does the program take?

  • You can complete the program in as little as two semesters (15 credits per semester) if you come to UM-Flint with a full  MTA stamp. Completing a degree in one year requires a commitment to studies and focused time to complete homework assignments. , However, this type of schedule is not recommended for full time working students.
  • The average student takes about 1 ½ years to complete at a part time pace. 
  • You can start the program prior to graduating with your ADN , which can help speed up the process. If you decide to become a concurrent student (i.e., taking classes for your associate degree (ADN)  in nursing while enrolling in a BSN program), make sure to work closely with your advisor to meet all rules. 

How many credits can transfer in?

  • There is no limit to how many credits are accepted as transfer credits. However, you must complete 30 credits with the University of Michigan-Flint to receive a degree from the University of Michigan-Flint.
  • A grade of C or better is required for all courses to transfer to UM-Flint. 
  • The last 30 credits must be completed at UM-Flint (this is called our residency rule).
  • Transfer credit is subject to change. Please talk to the UM-Flint representative before taking any additional coursework.

How much does the RN to BSN program cost?

  • It all depends on how many classes you have left to take and how quickly you go  through the program.
  • If you have a full MTA stamp or previous bachelor’s degree, and you want to transition to  full time, the program can be completed for as little as $13,744 a year (including all fees except for textbook and course material fees)

How many credit hours are required to earn the BSN degree?

  • 120 credit hours are required. However, only 30 credit hours must be completed from University of Michigan-Flint in order to confer (award) a  degree from UM-Flint.

Is an active RN license required for admission?

  • No, you do not need to have your RN license nor do you need to finish your ADN program to start.
  • A registered nursing license is required prior to taking any 400 level coursework and to graduate from the RN to BSN program.

Is it a University of Michigan Degree?

  • Yes, it is the same diploma signed by the Board of Regents, housed in  Ann Arbor, MI.
  • Your degree also comes with the same alumni benefits!

Is the program fully online?

  • Yes, our program is 100% online. There is no travel to campus necessary, though you are welcome to visit our gorgeous campus and walk with your graduating class during spring or fall commencement ceremonies. Additionally, NUR 412 (Community Health Nursing for Registered Nurses) and NUR420 (Leadership in Nursing), provides students the opportunity to complete their experiential learning  project locally, in your own community.

What are the admission requirements for the RN to BSN Program?

  • A minimum 2.0 GPA for admission.
  • A minimum 2.75 in your associates in nursing degree (ADN) program. 

Is University of Michigan-Flint accredited as a nursing school? 

  • We are regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and nationally accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

When can I start?

  • Students can begin prior to graduating with their associate degree (ADN) and prior to passing the NCLEX-RN. . Nursing licensure exam passature is required to take 400 level courses but all 100-300 level nursing courses can be completed prior to graduation/nursing licensure. 
  • There is a new start date every 7-weeks. We have two admission start dates in Fall (late August or late October), two admission start dates in Winter (early January or late February), Spring (late April), or Summer (late June).
