The University of Michigan-Flint is proud to offer many scholarships for students. Most scholarships are created by generous donors who believe in supporting students as they pursue their educational goals.

Each year, students can apply for scholarships that they are qualified for, based on specific criteria.

It is important to note that application requirements vary by scholarship, so students are encouraged to read all criteria and requirements carefully before submitting any applications. For questions regarding the process of applying for scholarships, please contact the Office of Financial Aid

Please note that the availability of certain scholarships and the scholarship amounts may depend on the information provided in your FAFSA.

What’s on this page?

  • Undergraduate Scholarships: These scholarships are intended for students enrolled in our undergraduate nursing programs which include the Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Traditional BSN, Accelerated Second Degree BSN, and Veterans Bachelor of Science in Nursing. These programs are designed for individuals taking their initial steps into professional nursing or those aiming to expand their credentials within the field.
  • Graduate Scholarships: These financial aids are available for students who are furthering their nursing education in our advanced degree programs such as the Master of Science in Nursing and Doctor of Nursing Practice. These programs cater to those committed to advancing their clinical expertise, leadership skills, and contributions to nursing science.

For a majority of the scholarships, students must submit an online application during the application period of
December 1st  through February 15th.
Graduate scholarships have an extended deadline from March 1st through June 1st.

If selected, the Scholarship is awarded the following Fall term.

School of Nursing Alumni Organization Endowed ScholarshipThis is one of the highest honors given to a UM-Flint Accelerated Second Degree BSN Program nursing student. It was established by the Farrehi Family Foundation in honor of Marjorie Christensen who was a registered nurse with the highest standards of practice. This award is operated under the auspices of the dean of the School of Nursing and is meant to encourage excellence in the learning and practice of the profession by rewarding superior performance and promoting competition in the school’s environment. Applicants must have completed at least two semesters of coursework in the program and have achieved a minimum 3.8 GPA and demonstrate the ability to apply evidence-based objective techniques to evaluate and improve the process of patient care. The applicant must submit significant and verifiable community service that demonstrates selflessness, courage, initiative to help others in need, lack of monetary concerns, and other high qualities we have come to associate with a good nurse and are in the traditions of a good nursing school.

Barnfather, Janet S., Undergraduate and Graduate Nursing Research ActivitiesEstablished in 2018, the UM-Flint School of Nursing Alumni Organization Endowed Scholarship provides tuition assistance for students in bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs. Funding was made possible by the generosity of alumni, benefactors and friends of the School of Nursing.

ELIGIBILITY AND LIMITATIONS:
Admitted to any of the following UM-Flint programs: Traditional BSN, Accelerated BSN, RN to BSN, MSN, or DNP. If RN is licensed, must hold an unencumbered license to practice in the U. S. Must have successfully completed two semesters in the Nursing program. Must be in good academic standing and eligible to progress in the Nursing program. Must have a minimum 3.50 GPA at the time of application. Applicant cannot be in receipt of a full scholarship from another source. Completion of the applicant’s statement and submission in the proper format by the stated deadline.

Judith Lee Wieloch Memorial Scholarship FundEstablished by her family and friends, the Judith Lee Wieloch Memorial Scholarship honors her life, nursing career, and dedication to helping the disadvantaged. Judy spent many years of her nursing career as an Emergency Room nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Flint. She loved being a part of the St. Joe’s community and made many lifelong friends with staff throughout the hospital. In addition to nursing, she embraced opportunities to teach CPR and EMT and conduct other in-service training. In the 1980s, Judy was one of the first Certified Emergency Nurses and was certified as an instructor for the program. After retiring from St. Joe’s, Judy embarked on a new journey to bring nursing homes throughout Michigan into compliance with state regulations. Notably, she served on a Governor’s Task Force for nursing homes and also as the Director of Nursing at one of the first nursing homes to add a skilled nursing wing. Throughout her nursing career, Judy had a passion for helping others, whether they were ER patients, students in her courses, residents at the nursing homes she managed, friends and neighbors, or just people less fortunate than herself. This scholarship honors Judy’s lifelong impact on countless nursing and medical professionals, as well as every patient and resident she treated and advocated for along the way. The Judith Lee Wieloch Memorial Scholarship provides financial assistance to nursing students admitted to the Traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Accelerated BSN, RN to BSN, Master of Science in Nursing, or the Doctor of Nursing Practice program at UM-Flint.

ELIGIBILITY AND LIMITATIONS:
1. Be currently enrolled BSN, MSN, or DNP UM-Flint student with at least six credits. 2. Be in good standing in the nursing program 3. While there is no minimum GPA, excellent academic performance in Nursing and Nursing Support Course coursework is required 4. Demonstrated financial need 5. Demonstrated community service with a letter from a community member or other documentation verifying service.

Bryer, Ben F. Foundation Endowed ScholarshipScholarship offers are merit-based, requiring a minimum cumulative 2.75 GPA and at least 26 completed credit hours. Applicants can be full- or part-time students enrolled in the UM-Flint/Hurley Medical Center Bachelor of Science in the Nursing Program. Applicants can be of sophomore, junior, or senior standing. The scholarship is intended for underrepresented students who demonstrate financial need and have graduated from a Flint high school. Applicants must have demonstrated volunteer services to the school/department (i.e., Student Government, Student Nurse Association, Class Officer, etc.).Please contact the Office of Financial Aid
D’Appolonia, Valentina M. Nursing ScholarshipScholarship offers are merit-based, and applicants can be full- or part-time students enrolled in UM-Flint RN to BSN, traditional BSN, ASD BSN, or VBSN who are in good academic standing. Applicants must have demonstrated volunteer participation in the community organization or activities. Demonstrated volunteer services to the school/department (i.e., Student Government, Student Nurse Association, Class Officer, etc.). Priority will be given to the following: travel offers for students enrolled in or scheduled to travel in international nursing courses; travel offers for students enrolled in or scheduled to travel nationally for a service-learning nursing course; scholarships for students who have demonstrated significant local service to the nursing profession or community.Please contact the Office of Financial Aid
Beverly Jones Scholarship for Veterans’ BS in Nursing StudentsEligible applicants must be enrolled full or part-time in the Accelerated Veterans’ Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at UM-Flint. If no VBSN candidate applies or is qualified or if the VBSN Program ceases to exist the scholarship may be offered to a veteran in the Accelerated Second Degree BSN, Traditional BSN, or RN/BSN Program. Applicants must be in good academic standing with a minimum GPA prescribed by the Nursing Department. Applicants must also be veterans of one of the official branches of the U.S. military services.  Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrated active and regular engagement in one or more program activities in the Nursing department, including but not limited to cohort ambassadors, media testimonials, peer mentoring, tutoring, Student Nurses Association membership, and research assistant, cohort/class officer, etc. Participation may be audited for verification by the selection committee. A letter of recommendation from a member of the nursing faculty in a sealed envelope must be included with the completed scholarship application. Offers are contingent upon the successful completion of the applicant’s first semester in the Nursing Program. The offer is not renewable however, previous recipients may apply.  The offer is to be used for tuition, fees, or other educational expenses. Pemberton, Charles and Larue Health Care Program ScholarshipTo assist students pursuing a degree in the health care program at UM-Flint who have returned to college after their education has been postponed or interrupted by a period of at least 30 months. Applicants must have completed at least 55 credit hours, have a minimum 2.8 cumulative GPA, and have completed at least six credit hours at UM-Flint. Furr, Marilyn Venton Nursing ScholarshipDesignated for UM-Flint students enrolled in the UM-Flint/Hurley Medical Center Bachelor of Science Nursing Program who have completed a minimum of 25 credit hours at UM-Flint and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3. Barnfather, Janet S., Undergraduate and Graduate Nursing Research ActivitieUndergraduate and graduate nursing students are eligible to apply for the Dr. Janet Barnfather Nursing Research Grant for the purpose of financial assistance with research-related expenses while enrolled in any Nursing program at the University of Michigan-Flint. Dr. Barnfather joined the University of Michigan faculty initially on the Ann Arbor campus in 1987. In 1995 she came to the Flint campus and taught in both the undergraduate and graduate nursing programs. A highly respected investigator, she shares her expertise with members of the health care community. Her passion for research inspires students, faculty, and community leaders. Her dedication to the profession of nursing, teaching, and helping students achieve their educational goals continues today. Dr. Barnfather’s legacy will continue through this grant which was established to support the dissemination of student research findings by funding travel to national and international conferences.

To be eligible, a student must fulfill all of the following criteria: Be currently enrolled at UM-Flint either full or part-time. Be in good standing (eligible to progress) in the BSN, MSN, DNP, or Post-Grad Certificate program. Have not received the Dr. Janet Barnfather Nursing Research Grant in the past year. The Dr. Janet Barnfather Nursing Research Grant may only be used for research-related expenses as incurred through educational coursework associated with completion of UM-Flint Nursing coursework.

In addition to nursing, she embraced opportunities to teach CPR, EMT, and conduct other in-service training. In the 1980s, Judy was one of the first Certified Emergency Nurses and was certified as an instructor for the program. After retiring from St. Joe’s, Judy embarked on a new journey to bring nursing homes throughout Michigan into compliance with state regulations. Notably, she served on a Governor’s Task Force for nursing homes and also as the Director of Nursing at one of the first nursing homes to add a skilled nursing wing. Throughout her nursing career, Judy had a passion for helping others, whether they were ER patients, students in her courses, residents at the nursing homes she managed, friends and neighbors, or just people less fortunate than herself. This scholarship honors Judy’s lifelong impact on countless nursing and medical professionals, as well as every patient and resident she treated and advocated for along the way. The Judith Lee Wieloch Memorial Scholarship provides financial assistance to nursing students admitted to the Traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Accelerated BSN, RN to BSN, Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), or the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program at the University of Michigan-Flint.

ELIGIBILITY AND LIMITATIONS:
1. Be currently enrolled BSN, MSN, or DNP UM-Flint student full or part-time (at least 6 credits) 2. Be in good standing (eligible to progress) in the nursing program 3. While there is no minimum GPA, excellent academic performance in Nursing (NUR) and Nursing Support Course (NSC) coursework is required 4. Demonstrated financial need 5. Demonstrated community service (Letter from a community member or other documentation verifying service)

The NRI and UM-Flint India Nurse Exchange FundThis program will grow the number and scope of opportunities for students to experience the challenges of providing nursing care in cultures different from their own and for vulnerable populations. With a focus on service learning, these Tran formative experiences have proven to change the way students view themselves and how they serve as nurses and patient advocates. International experiences are important in setting UM- Flint students apart as they enter the global workforce. Developing cultural competency is imperative for faculty as well. Leading international service learning, study abroad and exchange experiences enrich their teaching, establish them as a role model of service commitment, and expand their understanding of health care provision.

ELIGIBILITY AND LIMITATIONS:
1. Travel scholarship and service awards are merit based, and applicants can be full- time or part-time students in an UM-Flint MSN program who are in good academic standing.
2. Demonstrated volunteer participation in community organizations or activities.
3. Demonstrated volunteer service to the school/department (i.e., Student Government, Student Nurses Association, Class Officer, committee member, ect.).
4. Priority will be given to the following a. Travel awards for students enrolled in or scheduled to travel in international nursing courses. b. Travel awards for students enrolled in or scheduled to travel nationally for a service learning-nursing course. c. Scholarships for students who have demonstrated significant local service to the nursing profession or community.
5. Scholarship will be awarded annually and applied directly to the recipient’s tuition account.
6. The scholarship committee will be comprised of UM-Flint Department of Nursing Student Awards Committee.
7. The Office of Institutional Advancement will provide yearly reports, which include an accounting detail and biographical information about the scholarship recipient to FAAPI Members.
