Optimize your future with a business degree

About the School of Management

The School of Management is located on the second floor of the Riverfront Center on the University of Michigan-Flint campus. Our business management school’s newly updated facility is technology-rich. It includes a 24-hour finance lab with interactive investment and stock trend displays, a video recording classroom, and a video conference classroom allowing live joint classes with partnering international institutions or hybrid “Hyperflex” courses.

We are recognized as a high-ranking business school and accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, the top accrediting body for business schools worldwide. Only 5.5% of business schools in the U.S. have earned AACSB accreditation. Why is accreditation important to students? Our full-time professors have PhDs and are world-recognized business leaders. As leaders in their fields, they regularly publish research in leading academic journals. Our business faculty engage and inspire passionate classroom discussions around their research and the latest business topics, adding value to the student’s classroom experience.

Our mission at SOM is to deliver innovative, high-quality educational programs, create intellectual contributions that impact business theory and practice, meaningfully engage our local and global communities, and demonstrate the highest integrity and ethics in all that we do.

Why a BBA Degree?

A Bachelor in Business Administration degree ensures that you are professionally prepared and career-ready for the rapidly evolving world of business. The BBA degree provides you with a larger scope of business knowledge than other degrees, which may focus more on the arts or sciences. Business is everywhere. Everything runs like a business. Some industries that need business professionals are sports, entertainment, hospitals and healthcare, government and schools, construction, technology, non-profits, real estate, and more. Organizations need people with a business background to run a variety of business-related functions like production and distribution, sales and marketing, purchasing, accounting and finance, research and development, and human resources management. A bachelor’s of business degree offers flexibility to pursue a variety of career opportunities at any point in your professional career.

A BBA degree stands out to employers. It shows that you have a credible business perception and have acquired the necessary professional skills to be an asset to the organization. As a BBA student, your chances of acquiring a more notable and higher-paying job are increased. You’ll find BBA professionals as respected leaders in all sectors of business and management.

UM-Flint’s undergraduate business degree provides a well-rounded business experience that helps guide students through all areas of business. Students find financial independence while earning their business degrees through accounting and finance courses. Every student learns crucial financial fundamentals that can be translated to their own expenses.

A business student will graduate with 63% of their degree being business credits. The other portion of the degree will be important non-business courses, either taken at UM-Flint or transferred from another institution. The required non-business courses prepare a student’s foundation in other core areas within our society. In the general education courses, you may find another passion and pursue this as a minor!

“Choosing to attend UM-Flint for my bachelor’s degree is one of the best decisions I have made in my life. I learned so much here and have been able to broaden my horizons. I have met so many great people and even got to attend a conference in New York City my junior year.

UM-Flint made it possible to chase my dreams of becoming a CPA. I will be furthering my education here at UM-Flint through the MSA program starting this spring. I am excited for the road ahead and grateful that I am part of such a great university!”

I transferred from Mott Community College to UM-Flint at the beginning of 2019 to end off my senior year of undergrad. Transferring was scary because I wanted to make sure I brought over as many credits from Mott Community College as possible, and I wanted to make sure that I didn’t take courses that wouldn’t be accepted during the process. I worked closely with Erica Ogburn, my advisor at MCC, and Craig Gomolka as part of the Mott2UMF program. Without them, transferring would have been stressful. I am grateful that everything went smoothly. No money lost, no classes lost, and I had a clear plan to guide me through the process.

Joint BBA/MBA Degree

High-achieving students will have the opportunity to apply for the Joint BBA/MBA program in their junior year. This program will allow students to substitute senior-level BBA major courses with corresponding MBA concentration courses. Students also have the opportunity to waive four MBA foundation courses by earning B’s or better in the equivalent BBA courses.

BBA students in this program could waive/count up to seven courses toward their MBA, leaving only 8 courses to complete after graduating with their Bachelor of Business Administration degree. Business students in this program could earn their MBA for as few as 24 credits instead of the traditional 45 credits.

BBA Double Major

Stand out to employers with a BBA with majors in Finance and international Business or any combination of our eight business majors. For a few extra credits, you can diversify your brand to be a unique asset at any company.

There are many benefits of a double major:

  • Broader knowledge. Studying two majors earns you a level of knowledge within two disciplines that other students may not acquire.
  • More potential career paths. By double majoring, you are more likely to be promoted to positions that require knowledge in multiple functional areas.
  • Double count courses toward your second major. Students wishing to pursue a double major should review the business major share courses guide. If two majors share the same course, you only have to take that course once. This reduces the number of courses needed to complete your second major.

BBA Honors Program

Students can also apply to the Business Honors Program. Students with a 3.5 GPA from high school or transfer students qualify. The Honors Program has proven results. 100% of graduates are accepted into graduate and professional schools, and 97% acceptance rate into medical school (compared to 25% nationwide). Honor’s students pursue an integrated curriculum, plus have research opportunities, conference and presentation experience, and funds for an off-campus study experience up to $3,000.

Be Involved in Business

While students learn a lot in the classroom, the value of engagement outside the classroom is just as important. BBA students have opportunities to participate in study abroad trips, semester-long exchange programs, entrepreneurship competitions, internships, student organizations, and much more. Opportunities are available to those on campus and online.
