Strategic Transformation

Initiative Overview

For nearly 70 years, the University of Michigan-Flint has served our region by providing opportunities for professional development, growth and innovation. As a public institution, we are committed to providing high-quality educational opportunities for students to gain the skills and knowledge necessary to fulfill the workforce needs in this region and state.

Following a nationwide trend, UM-Flint has experienced a downward enrollment trend over approximately 10 years. We are excited to report a promising reversal in that trend with our fall 2023 enrollment numbers across our undergraduate and graduate programs. We want that upward mobility in enrollment to continue and accelerate. To this end, we have engaged in a Strategic Transformation planning process.

During the 2022-2023 academic year, the campus was asked to re-envision the university’s future. Former Chancellor Deba Dutta shared the results of this initial planning phase with University of Michigan President Santa Ono and the Board of Regents in spring 2023.

To date, the Office of the Chancellor has engaged the campus in refining the initial plan and integrating its academic and student services portions. Outreach to the community to seek input and support for the transformative plan was also included. Once the plan is finalized, Chancellor Alexander will present it to Ono and the Regents, seeking funding to support its implementation.

The overall goal of the strategic transformation is to help UM-Flint emerge as an academically strong and financially viable institution that is an undisputed engine for economic growth and social mobility in the region.

Additional information and updates about the Strategic Transformation initiative will continue to be posted to these webpages as they become available.
