first-year orientation

Orientation is a time to learn about the new academic environment, learn about all the support services available, and take the first steps to joining the University of Michigan-Flint community.

All first-year students need to register for an Orientation session to gain access to placement tests. Registration for classes normally takes place during on-campus Orientation sessions; exceptions are made during periods when the university is conducting First-Year Orientation only online.

Please review the following sections to prepare for your session.

  • Register for Orientation (After logging into the Student Information System, click on the “New Students Menu” tab; on the following screen, click on “Register for or Reschedule Orientation.”)
  • Pre-Orientation Checklist: See what you need to prepare, how to get here, where to park, and additional information.
  • Orientation Agenda: See the schedule and activities planned for your orientation.
  • Orientation FAQs: Here you will find answers to questions we receive from students and parents about Orientation.
  • Parent and Family Orientation: The Parent and Family Orientation is an optional separate session that runs concurrently with First Year (Freshman) Orientation. This session is designed to give parents and family members of first-year students the tools and information necessary to ensure their student’s success. We will discuss your rights as a parent or family member, safety on campus, financial literacy, academic and campus resources, and more. Although this orientation session for parents and family members is completely optional, we do welcome participation.

*A non-refundable Orientation fee of $150 is added to all first-year students’ tuition bill.
