guest student orientation
Welcome to the University of Michigan-Flint from the Student Success Center! Guest student status means that you are pursuing a degree at another institution and plan to complete just one or perhaps a few courses at UM-Flint to transfer back to your home school. It is up to your home school to determine how courses transfer. You should verify that the courses you take at UM-Flint will fulfill your needs at your home institution.
As a Guest Student, your transcripts are not entered into our system. As a result, you will need to obtain permission to register for any course that has a prerequisite. Typically, this is done by contacting the department and showing them a copy of your transcript that verifies completion of the prerequisite at your home institution. You can view the locations and phone numbers of each academic department here.
For example, let’s say you’d like to complete Calculus 1 (MTH 121) at UM-Flint. Our prerequisite is Pre-Calculus (MTH 120) with a grade of C or better. You would need to show our Mathematics Department proof that you have successfully completed Pre-Calculus. Upon approval of the department chair, the Mathematics Department will enter a registration override that will allow you to register for the class in our Student Information System (SIS—see the instructions sent with your admission letter).
As a guest student, you are eligible to register for classes during open registration. You can view the semester calendar for open registration dates here.
Upon completion of your course(s) at UM-Flint, you will need to have an official transcript sent to your home institution. You can view the instructions and forms needed to do this here.
While orientation is not required for guest students, we recommend that you attend a transfer student orientation session or access the online orientation. If you would like information regarding transfer student orientation, please contact the Student Success Center at [email protected].
